Economic Mobility + Social Connection

“If you grow up in a place where low income and high income people are interacting more, you are much more likely to rise up in the income distribution yourself.”

This finding by Raj Chetty’s team leads to the question: “What might we do to increase cross-class friendships?” Chetty’s research finds that it’s not enough to mix classes in schools. We need to facilitate activities, programs, policies that encourage friendships. The team observed that cross-class friendships are increased through things like recreational and religious groups. If you have something in common, you are more likely to become friends.

How else might we support more cross-class friendships both on the programmatic level and on the policy level?
