Choosing Presence Over Absence

It’s easy to pay attention to the folks who don’t show up. I know that I’ve spent my share of time and energy dwelling on absence, on who’s missing. But I finally realized that is a bad habit because it distracts me from paying attention to the people who DO show up—and that’s not fair to them. So when my attention drifts toward deficit, I try to redirect it toward abundance. When I catch myself fixating on empty chairs, I turn to face the people actually in the room.

This isn’t about ignoring grief—that’s dangerous and leads to acting out. But I do want to honor the abundance in my life and the people who contribute to it. Lean into love.
