Genius Doesn’t Behave

Many years ago I worked in the Education Department at The Metropolitan Opera. We went into schools and helped youth write, create, and produce their own operas. One of the great things about this program was that each student got to choose what they wanted to do and how they wanted to contribute. Some were performers, others were writers, directors, set builders, and costume designers. Over and over again their teachers were amazed by their engagement. We’d hear things like, “I can’t believe how engaged X student is. In the classroom, he can’t sit still for one second.”

Oo. I have thoughts.

Since when is sitting still a virtue? This student, like many others, is likely a restless genius. Geniuses don’t behave in their seats. They can’t sit still. They are dancers, builders, athletes, artists. How do we shift our mindset from punishing them for having creative energy to supporting them and encouraging them to lead?
