A few days ago I wrote a post called Exploring Our Values inspired by a long list of values shared by Elena Aguilar. The values I chose from her list were: Imagination, Equity, and Meaningful Work. To the value Imagination I added the word Collective. Solo imagination is great and needed but in order to make positive lasting change the in the world, we need to dream together. Collective Imagination.
Equity is not only a value but the high level goal. We strive for equity not only because it’s fair but because when folks are on a level playing field, more folks have the breathing space to dream, and then of course to dream together. And when more of us can dream, we dream up better stuff. More ambitious, more meaningful.
The last value I chose was Meaningful Work arguing that other values like Growth and Results fit inside of Meaningful Work. But I think I had it backwards. Results is the ultimate goal here. Meaningful Work is great and gives us many benefits, but this work without results is B+ work. Now, a B+ is a good grade, but as long as we are dreaming, why not strive for an A? Strive for results.
