“Trust is a confident relationship with the unknown…It’s really all about risks. Not big, intense, reckless, risky behaviors but consistent micro-risks that help us build trust. The daily phone call or the weekly meeting at the same time. The consistency is what develops the trust.”
This is a quote from Esther Perel. In it, she is talking about romantic relationships, but I think this principle applies to our friendships and our work relationships as well, especially to our teams and close collaborators.
When we want to make a change in the world, one path is to come up with ideas and test them out. In doing this, we put ourselves out there. It can feel scary because we know that our first attempts at addressing a problem can miss the mark. But we have to put ourselves out there to get feedback, analyze the feedback, and revise. It’s a beautiful and terrifying process. The process is more beautiful and less terrifying when there is a shared understanding about risk that is met with consistent behavior. These are the elements that deepen trust over time. These are the “vitamins” we need to keep us going.
