The Role of Friendship in Economic Mobility

Raj Chetty and his team research economic mobility, race, and class. One of their main findings is captured in this quote:

“If you grow up in a place where low income and high income people are interacting more, you are much more likely to rise up in the income distribution yourself.”

This finding leads to the question: “What might we do to increase cross-class friendships?” Chetty’s research finds that it’s not enough to mix classes in schools. We need to encourage friendships. The team observed that cross class friendships are increased through things like recreational and religious groups. If you have something in common, you are more likely to become friends.
