12 Days of Play. 1. Joy in Repetition

I ended my previous post with a note about playfulness. While I am a creative person and am playful in how I approach solo work, playfulness in my collaborative work doesn’t come naturally to me. So I’d like to spend the next twelve days, up to the new year, exploring this theme. At the end of the run, perhaps, we’ll have a little deck of cards, or a “sticky” list of principles, for play.

Words and lyrics and music lend themselves to playfulness so post number 1 features a Prince tune that is chock full of play. In one of the opening lines, for example, there is a clever bit where he describes a scene with lyrics but also illustrates it with sound:

All the poets and the part time singers always hang inside
Live music from a band plays a song called “Soul Psychodelicide”

The backing vocals and rhythm guitar rise to the occasion to help tell the story. Playful.

There’s joy in repetition. There’s joy in repetition.
